Expert Warns First-Time Buyers of Credit File Chaos and Stress Tests

In a shocking expose on the latest mortgage trends, MoneySavingExpert.com founder Martin Lewis has issued a stern warning to first-time buyers: check your credit file before applying for a mortgage. According to Lewis, even small mistakes can lead to rejection, leaving aspiring homeowners stuck in limbo.

Lewis took to his popular ITV show this week to share his expert advice on navigating the complex world of mortgages and housing. “It’s not just about your credit score,” he stressed. “Your credit file is a detailed report that shows your history of repaying debt, as well as any outstanding debts or missed payments.”

Credit File is different to a Credit Score

But what exactly does Lewis mean by “credit file”? Unlike credit scores, which are essentially a snapshot of an individual’s borrowing habits, credit files provide a comprehensive picture of their financial past. And it’s crucial to get this report spotless before applying for a mortgage.

Lewis revealed that even something as simple as an old mobile phone being linked to the wrong address can trigger a fraud scoring system, resulting in mortgage rejection. “All they needed to do was update the old mobile phone address,” he explained, highlighting the importance of accuracy.

In addition to reviewing your credit file, Lewis recommends minimising other credit applications and avoiding missed bill payments if you’re about to start a mortgage application. But perhaps most crucially, he cautions aspiring homeowners to be “frugal” with their spending in the run-up to applications.

Stricter affordability stress tests

That’s because lenders are now subject to strict affordability stress tests, designed to ensure borrowers can afford their new property at a higher rate. Think of it like this: lenders aren’t just asking if you can afford your mortgage; they’re also testing whether you can handle a more expensive mortgage when interest rates rise in the future.

To avoid falling short, Lewis advises first-time buyers to present evidence of their income, bills, and spending habits to lenders. And with interest rates on the horizon, it’s never been more crucial to get your finances in order before applying for that dream home.

Don’t risk being left on the sidelines – check your credit file, tighten up your wallet, and avoid those pesky stress tests. With Martin Lewis’ expert guidance, you can navigate the complex world of mortgages and secure your place in the property market.
