Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) is facing intense scrutiny after allegations surfaced regarding a senior manager’s support for far-right views on social media.
The controversy, raised by the University and College Union (UCU), has sparked concerns over management ethics and adherence to the university’s social media policies.
According to the UCU, tweets and ‘likes’ from a personal account belonging to a senior manager, expressed support for far-right ideologies. The posts, made in 2024, included endorsements of Tommy Robinson, a notorious far-right activist currently serving an 18-month prison sentence for contempt of court.
The UCU asserts that these tweets were interspersed with promotional content for ARU events, including Pride celebrations and inclusivity initiatives. This contradiction has raised serious questions about the university’s commitment to its stated values of diversity and inclusion.
UCU Condemns ARU’s Response
The matter was formally raised in a UCU briefing, which condemned ARU’s handling of the situation, citing “serious failures of management and gross misconduct.” The union expressed a lack of confidence in both the director of marketing and the chief operating officer (COO), alleging that concerns had been dismissed despite repeated attempts to address them through official channels.
The UCU statement also highlighted tweets that reportedly promoted the ‘Great Replacement Theory,’ a widely discredited far-right conspiracy. Additionally, some posts were alleged to have supported extreme positions on geopolitical conflicts, including Israel’s actions in Gaza.
In response, an ARU spokesperson stated:
“Anglia Ruskin University is dedicated to fostering an inclusive culture that promotes equality, values diversity, and maintains a supportive environment for all students and staff.”
The university confirmed that the matter had been investigated and that “appropriate action” had been taken, but refused to disclose details. Despite the controversy, the senior manager remains in his position.
This incident raises broader concerns about the accountability of university leadership and the enforcement of social media policies. Institutions like ARU are expected to uphold inclusivity and ethical standards, yet the UCU’s allegations suggest a disconnect between policy and practice.
The situation remains tense as the UCU continues to push for transparency and action. Whether ARU will take further steps to address these concerns remains to be seen.
