A thief who targeted the University of Cambridge college bike store has been jailed following a series of burglaries. Liam Berna, 32, was caught on CCTV breaking into the secure cycle store on four separate occasions between January 17 and January 20, stealing bikes.
In addition to the bike thefts, Berna also stole laundry products and threatened a shop worker with a bike lock at the Co-op store on Mill Road on January 26. He was sentenced to one year in prison after pleading guilty to multiple offences, including burglary, shop theft, threatening behavior, and assaulting an emergency worker.
The court also imposed a five-year Criminal Behaviour Order, which prohibits Berna from entering any University of Cambridge college and from owning more than one bike at a time without verifiable proof of ownership. Furthermore, he is banned from possessing any bicycle or related accessories without evidence of rightful ownership.
PC Rob Tindall, who led the investigation, emphasised the ongoing efforts to target thieves like Berna who cause distress to cyclists across Cambridge. “We’ll continue to hold offenders accountable and ensure they face the consequences of their actions,” he said.
This case highlights the importance of security measures in protecting valuable property, especially bikes, which are often targeted in urban areas. Cambridge residents and students are urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to local authorities.
