Exciting new plans have been revealed for the next stage of the Wellcome Genome Campus expansion in Hinxton, near Cambridge. Developers have submitted detailed proposals for two new state-of-the-art research buildings, marking a significant step forward in the campus’s ongoing growth.
The expansion has been in the works for several years, with outline permission granted in 2020 for a transformational development. The broader project includes 1,500 new homes, shops, restaurants, cafes, and bars, alongside world-class science facilities.
Developers Urban and Civic Hinxton Ltd highlighted their commitment to creating a vibrant life science community with the amenities needed to support researchers, businesses, and residents.
The new application, submitted to South Cambridgeshire District Council, outlines the construction of two Research and Translation infrastructure buildings near the A1303. These buildings are designed to cater to a range of science-focused tenants, from startups to established companies.
One of the buildings will also feature a pub or restaurant, creating a social space open to both campus workers and the wider community.
The developers describe this expansion as a “substantial investment” by Wellcome, reflecting the ambition and vision for the broader Wellcome Genome Campus. The goal is to provide flexible, cutting-edge research spaces that can adapt to different scientific needs, fostering innovation and collaboration in the life sciences sector.
With these plans in motion, the Wellcome Genome Campus is set to become an even more dynamic global research hub, attracting talent and businesses from across the world.
