In a significant redevelopment move, the Pizza Hut and Starbucks located on Newmarket Road in Cambridge will be demolished to pave the way for a new office complex. The development plans have been approved for a five-storey office block at Cambridge Retail Park, with a design aimed at transforming the area into a more vibrant and sustainable destination.
The developer, Railway Pension Nominees Ltd, commented on the creation of a “bold, striking” building to replace the current three low-quality structures. This new office block will feature a mix of retail frontage, office spaces facing Newmarket Road, and extensive landscaping. The goal is to offer a more inviting environment for both visitors and businesses, contributing to the ongoing revitalisation of Cambridge Retail Park.
While many local officials have welcomed the redevelopment of what has been described as an “eyesore,” concerns about the height of the building have been raised. Some worry that the new office block may “dominate” Newmarket Road, though developers assure that the design has been carefully considered, with the height not significantly exceeding the existing Premier Inn building.
In addition to the office space, plans include a new retail/food and beverage unit, although more detailed plans will need to be approved before construction can begin. Despite some concerns from nearby residents about the construction process, the developer is committed to keeping the community informed.
