A new NHS-backed course is giving Cambridgeshire residents the chance to lower their blood pressure without relying on medication.

The Blood Pressure Balance Programme, developed by The Mindful Life Group CIC and funded by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Integrated Care Board, offers a six-week online course designed to help participants take control of their health through simple daily practices.

Led by a clinical psychologist, the course combines movement, breathwork, attention training and stress management techniques. Rather than prescribing tablets, it equips people with a personalised toolkit of strategies they can use at home or at work to keep their blood pressure in check.

The initiative comes at a critical time. In 2023, nearly one in eight people in the region were either diagnosed with, or receiving treatment for, high blood pressure – a major risk factor for heart attacks and strokes.

Early results suggest the approach is working. Participants in the most recent course recorded an average reduction of 14 points in systolic blood pressure and 8 points in diastolic readings by the end of the six weeks. Many also reported improvements in mood, with reduced anxiety and depression levels.

One participant, Jackie, said the course transformed her outlook. After several high readings, her GP suggested medication, but she wanted to try alternatives first.

“After completing the course, my blood pressure dropped significantly and my doctor no longer recommended medication,” she explained. “The breathwork was particularly helpful – I can use it anywhere when I feel stressed.”

The fully funded scheme ensures there are no financial barriers, while its online delivery makes it accessible to people with mobility challenges, busy schedules, or those living in rural areas. Participants can also continue to practice with their peer group after the course ends, providing long-term support.

The next Blood Pressure Balance Programme begins in October, and organisers are urging those concerned about their health to register early as spaces are limited.
