A serious crash on the A14 near Horningsea last night (April 22) has left one person dead and three others seriously injured. The incident, which occurred just after 9:25pm on the eastbound carriageway, involved multiple vehicles and prompted a swift response from emergency services.
Cambridgeshire Police confirmed that the deceased and the injured were all travelling in the same car. The driver of a lorry involved in the crash, a 38-year-old man from Cambridge, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He remains in custody while enquiries continue.
The A14 remains closed between junctions 34 and 35 as officers carry out accident investigation work. The closure has caused significant disruption, with congestion stretching back to junction 32 and affecting diversion routes through surrounding villages.
Cambridgeshire Police are now appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash or saw the vehicles beforehand to come forward. Dashcam footage from the area around the time of the incident could prove vital to the investigation.
A police spokesperson said:
We are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the vehicles prior to the collision, or who may have dashcam footage that could help piece together the moments leading up to this tragic event.”
Traffic monitoring service Inrix reported queueing traffic and urged motorists to follow the lengthy diversion via the A10 through Milton and Waterbeach, reconnecting with the A14 at junction 37.
Emergency services, including Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue and the East of England Ambulance Service, were present at the scene. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Cambridgeshire Police via their non-emergency number or website.
