Cambridge’s thriving startup ecosystem is set to become more accessible to everyday investors with the launch of a new fund – the Cambridge Venture Index (CVI) SEIS/EIS Fund. Developed by ET Capital and a team led by experienced angel investor Martin Rigby, the fund hopes to “democratise investment” by diversifying risk and opening up opportunities beyond traditional venture capital models.

Unlike conventional approaches that focus on a small number of high-potential startups, the CVI fund will adopt an index-style approach, investing in a broad range of early-stage businesses within the Cambridge cluster. This strategy is underpinned by 30 years of analysis of nearly 200 companies in the area, demonstrating a potential for superior returns compared to stock market investments or selective venture capital.

We want to offer participation in the Cambridge cluster to the widest possible range of people

explains Martin Rigby. “By using a diversified approach, we can reduce risk and generate good returns for individual investors who might otherwise be unable or unwilling to invest. Increasing investment in the cluster benefits not just the companies, but the communities they support – and that’s what we mean by ‘democratising’ investment.”

The fund will operate through a series of launches, starting with CVI S/EIS 1, which is slated to begin investing in 10-15 startups between April 2025 and March 2026. This initial fund is specifically targeted towards individual investors looking to support and benefit from Cambridge’s long-term success.

James Griffiths, a director at ET Capital, highlights the appeal for those already connected to the Cambridge innovation landscape. “We recognise that many potential investors have contributed directly to the cluster’s growth and this fund offers a way to continue that support and benefit from future success.”

The fund leverages significant tax advantages through the Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS) and Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS), making it an attractive option for investors. ET Capital also brings to bear its extensive network, granting access to high-quality deal flow from Cambridge’s leading incubators and investment originators.

Looking ahead, ET Capital plans to launch further funds catering to institutional investors and family offices, all while maintaining the diversified, index-style approach that underpins the CVI fund. This strategy aims to unlock wider access to the UK’s innovation economy and foster sustained growth within the Cambridge startup community.
