Neil Harris has returned to Cambridge United as head coach on a two-and-a-half-year deal. The 47-year-old previously managed the U’s for a brief period during the 2023-24 season before leaving to rejoin Millwall. After departing The Den in December, Harris is back at Cambridge, replacing Garry Monk.
Cambridge United Struggles in League One
Cambridge United is currently at the bottom of League One, sitting eight points from safety. The club hopes Harris can turn their fortunes around and lead them to survival. Alongside his appointment, Cambridge has also brought back former manager Mark Bonner as director of football.
Club Leadership’s Vision
Club majority owner Paul Barry acknowledged the tough season, stating, “This has been a challenging season which has not gone as any of us would have hoped. There have been lessons for all of us to learn.”
Barry emphasised Harris’s impact during his short tenure last season, adding, “He is a winner, and his track record as a head coach speaks for itself.”
Harris’s Coaching Career
Harris is best known for his time at Millwall, where he remains the club’s all-time top goalscorer. As a coach, he led them to Championship promotion in 2017. His experience also includes managing Cardiff City and Gillingham.
Mark Bonner’s New Role
Bonner, who guided Cambridge to League Two promotion in 2021, returns as director of football. He previously managed Gillingham for eight months before leaving in January.
Barry praised Bonner’s understanding of the club, stating, “Mark knows the club inside out—its strengths, culture, and values. His leadership and strategic thinking will make him an outstanding director of football.”
With Harris back in charge and Bonner overseeing football operations, Cambridge United is determined to fight for survival in League One.
