Motorists in Cambridge are being warned to prepare for significant delays next month as a major road is set to close for nearly two months. Mowbray Road, a key route in the south of the city, will be shut to vehicles near the Queen Edith’s Way roundabout from Monday 21 April until Monday 16 June.

The closure is to allow UK Power Networks (UKPN) to carry out essential electrical works, including laying new cables in existing ducting. The works will run daily between 8am and 6pm, with the closure points shifting as the project progresses. Although access for residents and local businesses will be maintained, through-traffic will need to follow a lengthy diversion.

The official diversion route will send drivers via Queen Edith’s Way, Hills Road, the A603, Newmarket Road, Barnwell Road, Brooks Road, Perne Road and back to Mowbray Road. The detour is expected to add around six miles and 16 minutes to journey times.

Disruption follows earlier works in April

The Mowbray Road closure comes on the heels of other scheduled works by UKPN in the area. Temporary traffic lights will be in place earlier in April on both Cherry Hinton Road roundabout and parts of Mowbray Road as preparatory ducting is installed.

UKPN has confirmed it will be notifying affected residents in advance. Meanwhile, drivers are being encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys during the disruption period.

A spokesperson for UK Power Networks stated:

We are carrying out vital infrastructure upgrades to ensure the long-term reliability of electricity supply in the area. We appreciate the patience of residents and road users while we complete this important work.

Locals concerned about the impact on travel and access can expect further information via letters and online updates. The temporary arrangements aim to minimise disruption while ensuring safety for both workers and the public.

Cambridge residents are no strangers to roadworks, but the scale and duration of this closure is likely to test commuters’ patience. With diversions stretching across key city routes, delays during peak hours are almost certain.
