A devastating fire tore through Midsummer Energy’s newly opened warehouse in Whittlesford in the early hours of Saturday morning (17 May), destroying or damaging all stock stored on site.
The blaze, which broke out around 1.45am on Mill Lane, triggered a large-scale emergency response involving around 70 firefighters from across Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Hertfordshire and Essex. At its peak, the inferno covered a 60m by 40m area, requiring ten fire engines, two aerial appliances and multiple support vehicles.
Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that, due to the risk of structural collapse, crews opted to contain rather than combat the fire directly. The operation was gradually scaled back through Saturday morning, with just two fire engines remaining by 11am as the fire was allowed to burn out in a controlled manner. A formal investigation into the cause will begin once the site is deemed safe.
The company, which specialises in components for solar and heat pump installations, has assured customers that off-grid and heat pump orders are being managed through alternative channels. Real-time updates are being shared via the firm’s website and social media.
Local residents were advised to keep doors and windows shut due to smoke on Saturday. William Westley Primary School, also on Mill Lane, was unaffected.
Despite the setback, Midsummer Energy said it remains committed to maintaining service and thanked the public for their patience and support.
