A former office block in Histon is set to become the new spiritual and community hub for the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) after South Cambridgeshire District Council approved the plans.
The church, which currently occupies a space on Cherry Hinton Road in Cambridge, was given notice to vacate its premises by March 2025. In response, RCCG submitted a proposal to repurpose a commercial unit at Trust Court, Histon, as its new base.
Planning documents describe the City of David Parish, part of the internationally active RCCG network, as a “vibrant multicultural church”. The new location will not only host regular worship services but also offer a food bank and weekly events such as Bible study, a mother and baby group, and choir rehearsals.
While the application received the green light, it did raise some concerns—particularly around noise generated from amplified music and choir practices. Environmental health officers flagged the potential disruption to neighbouring businesses and residents.
To address these concerns, the council advised the church to develop a management plan to mitigate sound levels. Suggested steps include keeping doors and windows closed during services and opting for acoustic rather than amplified instruments.
Despite the noise issues, the council recognised the church’s broader community role. The food bank is set to operate on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, providing a vital support service for vulnerable local residents.
The decision marks a significant moment for the congregation, offering both continuity and opportunity for expansion after their pending relocation.
