Cambridge United has announced the departure of head coach Garry Monk after a difficult run of results in League One. Monk, who joined the club in March, leaves following just one win in 13 league games.
The former Birmingham City and Sheffield Wednesday manager was brought in to replace Neil Harris, who left after 17 games to take charge at Millwall. Monk successfully steered the U’s to safety last season, securing an 18th-place finish. Over the summer, Cambridge underwent significant squad changes, hoping to improve their fortunes.
However, the current campaign has been challenging. The U’s took just one point from their opening nine games and, despite a brief resurgence in October with three consecutive wins, they now find themselves at the bottom of the table. Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat to Exeter City left Cambridge eight points adrift of safety, leading to Monk’s departure.
Club Statement on Monk’s Exit
Cambridge United‘s majority owner, Paul Barry, expressed gratitude for Monk’s efforts, stating:
“We would like to thank Garry for his hard work and commitment over the past year. He truly embraced the club during his time here, and we are disappointed that things did not work out as hoped. In the end, the league table does not lie. It is the right time to make a change. With 15 games remaining, we must come together and fight to preserve our League One status.”
What’s Next for Cambridge United?
With Monk gone, Cambridge United must act quickly to find a new head coach. The club will need strong leadership and a clear strategy to avoid relegation. Fans will be eager to see how the U’s respond in the crucial games ahead.
