A persistent pothole on the busy Milton Roundabout has been reported over 230 times since January 2023, with frustrated drivers calling it “unavoidable” and “incredibly dangerous”. Now, Cambridgeshire County Council says a permanent solution is finally on the way.
Located in the left-hand lane heading into Cambridge over the A14, the pothole has reappeared multiple times despite repeated patch-up jobs. Some motorists say they’ve seen it fixed and fail at least three times in the past six months.
Freedom of Information data shows 18 work orders were raised for the pothole between January 2023 and February 2025. Drivers navigating the roundabout have taken to swerving into adjacent lanes to avoid the hazard, raising serious safety concerns.
Descriptions of the pothole’s size vary – from “as big as a dinner plate” to “the size of a lorry tyre”. In just the first two months of 2025, the council received 17 new reports and attempted two more short-term fixes.
Speaking to the BBC, A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire County Council said: “We’re aware of the issues on Milton Roundabout. While we’ve been making temporary repairs to keep the road safe, we’re now planning a permanent fix within the next month.”
The council added that the upcoming work will involve digging deeper to allow for a structural check of the road. Depending on what the investigation uncovers, further work might be required.
For motorists who’ve dodged this pothole for two years, that fix can’t come soon enough.
