Ely’s cultural scene is set for a cinematic boost as Ely Community Cinema prepares to launch next month at The Maltings. Backed by an army of 50 volunteers, local business support, and the City of Ely Council, this non-profit initiative promises to bring quality film experiences to the heart of the city.
At a recent Rotary Club meeting on April 17, project lead Linda Neate gave an exciting update on the cinema’s progress. She revealed that the venue is aiming for up to 80 screenings in its first year, with 32 dates already locked in. The project has already attracted a team of professionals spanning film selection, IT, law, and administration.
The cinema will open its doors to the public for the first time on 18 May at 7.30pm, with tickets available online or on the door. An annual membership scheme is in the works, offering perks such as free or discounted tickets.
Local businessman Peter Daw has stepped in to cover initial set-up costs, with repayment postponed until the cinema reaches financial stability. The City of Ely Council is also backing the initiative by offering The Maltings venue rent-free.
With running costs estimated at £60,000 annually, the team estimates each screening must sell around 64 tickets to break even. The first year will involve higher costs due to staff training and insurance. To reduce equipment costs, the team has acquired projection gear from the now-closed Babylon cinema, although replacement parts may prove hard to source in future.
A £25,000 reserve is being planned for eventual kit replacement, and a maintenance contract includes a loan system to avoid service disruption. Marketing efforts include a fresh logo, new website, digital noticeboards and leaflets, with additional focus on afternoon showings and children’s group packages.
