Ely Community Fire & Rescue Station has taken an unusual step in its ongoing training programme, equipping its team with the skills to safely and effectively handle snakes and lizards.
Firefighters recently participated in a specialist animal handling experience, preparing them for potential incidents involving reptiles in the local community.
The Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service facilitated the session, bringing in experts from The Animal Experience to deliver the training. The focus wasn’t simply on capturing the animals, but on comprehensive welfare and safety protocols. Firefighters learned techniques for approaching, handling, and containing snakes and lizards without causing them harm, even when the animals are distressed or agitated.
While many associate fire and rescue services with tackling fires and rescuing people, animal-related incidents are increasingly common. This training acknowledges the need to protect both the public and the animals themselves. A distressed reptile encountered by the public might lead to a call for assistance, and these firefighters are now equipped to respond appropriately.
The training demonstrates a proactive approach from Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service, acknowledging the diverse range of challenges its crews face and investing in the skills needed to respond effectively, whatever the situation. This unique skillset will undoubtedly prove valuable in keeping both the community and local wildlife safe.
