Ely College students are celebrating after winning a national competition and securing more than £5,000 worth of laser cutting equipment. The contest, run by Halifax-based HPC Laser, challenged schools across the United Kingdom to submit original A4 designs inspired by nature, intended for laser engraving or cutting.

Ely College’s entries impressed the judges, placing the school at the top and awarding them an LS6090 laser cutter, complete with delivery, professional installation, and comprehensive training for staff. The winning designs, crafted by three talented Ely College students, were particularly noteworthy for their creativity and execution.

Students transformed their concepts into tangible pieces including an intricately designed giraffe jewellery holder, a detailed wolf diorama enhanced with integrated lighting, and a cleverly designed, slot-together tree model. These projects demonstrated not only artistic skill, but also an understanding of the capabilities of laser cutting technology.

The addition of this equipment will broaden the curriculum and provide students with valuable future-proof skills. Teachers have highlighted the importance of equipping students with contemporary skills for the modern workforce. The laser cutter would give students valuable skills for the future.

The school also praised the competition itself, acknowledging the dedication and hard work demonstrated by the students in developing their designs from initial concepts into finished products. The investment in this technology will undoubtedly benefit Ely College students for years to come, fostering creativity and innovation within the school community.
