One of the most frequently struck railway bridges in the UK has been hit again. The Station Road bridge in Ely, was blocked on Wednesday evening after a vehicle became wedged underneath it. The incident, which occurred at 5:54 pm, disrupted traffic until around 7:15 pm. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
This particular bridge, which carries the Ely to Peterborough line, is notorious for collisions due to its low 2.7-meter clearance. In fact, last year, it was named the joint second most-bashed bridge in Britain by Network Rail, with 17 strikes recorded.
In response to the ongoing issue, Cambridgeshire County Council has announced plans to install 24/7 monitoring cameras at the site this spring. These cameras will track general traffic data and monitor near-misses, with the goal of reducing the number of collisions. The council is collaborating with the rail body and a consultation firm to implement these changes, hoping that the added surveillance will help prevent future accidents.
