East Cambridgeshire is preparing to mark the significant 80th anniversaries of Victory in Europe (VE) Day on May 8th and Victory over Japan (VJ) Day on August 15th.
Local authorities and community groups are encouraging residents to organise events and activities to honour the generation who lived through and fought in World War II.
The commemorations aim to pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of those who served in the forces, as well as the civilians who supported the war effort on the home front. A collaborative effort between Visit Ely, The City of Ely Council, Ely Cathedral, and the Royal British Legion Ely branch is planning a full day of celebrations for VE Day, including services of thanksgiving, celebratory events, and the traditional lighting of a beacon. Details of commemorations for VJ Day are yet to be announced.
Organisers are eager to compile a comprehensive list of events taking place throughout the district, and are appealing to parish councils, town councils, and individuals planning any form of commemoration – from large-scale public gatherings to small street parties – to get in touch.
