A driver was taken to hospital on Wednesday afternoon following a dramatic crash at the notorious Boots Bridge junction between Manea and Wimblington, sparking renewed safety concerns for one of the region’s most dangerous crossroads.
Emergency services rushed to the scene at around 14:50 BST, where they found one car on its side and a 4×4 lodged atop a roadside barrier. The driver of the overturned vehicle was treated for minor injuries at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, police confirmed.
The road was temporarily closed to allow recovery crews to remove the vehicles and for Cambridgeshire Highways to repair the damaged barrier. The incident once again draws attention to the high number of collisions at the Fenland junction – an area long considered an accident blackspot by local residents.
Only recently, new road markings and signage were installed at the crossroads in an attempt to reduce the frequency of crashes. However, with another accident already recorded, questions are now being raised over whether those changes are making enough of a difference.
Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward as they continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
Residents and road users in the area have frequently called for more robust action to improve safety at the junction, suggesting speed restrictions, warning signals or even structural changes to the layout. This latest incident may strengthen the case for more comprehensive intervention.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Cambridgeshire Police.
