A dangerous driver who killed a pedestrian while speeding has been jailed for more than three years. Gyokay Gelen, 28, fatally struck 40-year-old Jonathan Mills while driving along St Neots Road in Eaton Socon on April 9, 2023.
Tragic Collision on a 30mph Road
Mr. Mills was innocently crossing the road at around 9 PM when Gelen, driving a white Skoda Octavia, hit him. Tragically, Mr. Mills died at the scene. Police conducted a roadside drugs test on Gelen, which returned a positive result for cannabis. He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drug driving.
Court Finds Gelen Guilty
During a trial at Peterborough Crown Court on November 19, 2024, evidence revealed that while Gelen was under the legal drug limit, he had ignored a warning light indicating a fault in his car’s anti-lock braking system (ABS). This failure to repair his vehicle contributed to the accident.
On February 19, 2025, the court sentenced Gelen to three years and six months in prison for causing death by dangerous driving. Additionally, he received a driving ban for five years and nine months.
Police Issue Warning on Speeding
DC Paddy Reeve of Cambridgeshire Police emphasized the consequences of dangerous driving. He stated, “Gelen chose to drive at excessive speeds through a residential area, despite clear road signs designed to reduce speed. Had he been within the 30mph limit, he could have safely stopped and avoided hitting Mr. Mills.”
This tragic case serves as a stark reminder to always drive responsibly. Speeding in residential areas puts lives at risk. Our thoughts remain with Mr. Mills’ family during this difficult time.
