A family has received approval to expand their Gypsy and Traveller site in Somersham, Cambridgeshire. Huntingdon District Council (HDC) has granted permission for three additional pitches at Hilltop Orchard, located on St Ives Road. The decision aims to address the ongoing shortage of Gypsy and Traveller pitches in the district.
While the district council supported the application, Somersham Parish Council voiced concerns about potential overdevelopment. Parish Councillor Bill Bruce highlighted worries about the impact on the surrounding area, citing road infrastructure challenges and concerns over the site’s compatibility with the countryside’s character. However, he clarified that these concerns were not rooted in bias against the Traveller community.
Martin England, representing the applicant family, reassured officials that the site has been well-established for over a decade. He emphasised that the new pitches follow best practices for Gypsy and Traveller sites and are designed to meet high standards.
Planning officers further noted that the site is well-screened by trees and bushes, minimising its visual impact on the area. Conservative Councillor Eric Butler supported the expansion, noting that the site has always been tidy and well-kept. Independent Group Councillor Tom Sanderson also backed the proposal, stating that previous concerns had been adequately addressed.
After a detailed review, HDC councillors voted in favour of the application. The decision reflects the district’s commitment to accommodating the needs of the Gypsy and Traveller community while balancing local concerns.
