On Thursday, 6th March 2025, a groundbreaking ceremony marked a significant milestone in the development of Northstowe’s Unity Centre. The ceremony celebrated the beginning of construction for the permanent community centre in the growing town of Northstowe, a project expected to transform the area’s social and community landscape.
The Unity Centre, funded through a collaboration between South Cambridgeshire District Council, Urban & Civic, and the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, is set to provide an exciting range of facilities for local residents. With £6.5 million from the Council and £2.2 million from Phase 1 developers, this state-of-the-art community hub will open its doors in early 2026.
Construction of the Unity Centre is being carried out by Kier, with the facility designed to serve as the heart of Northstowe, hosting activities, events, and essential services for the community.
What the Unity Centre Will Offer
Once complete, the Unity Centre will feature a variety of spaces, including:
- Main Hall: A versatile space for public events, arts, lectures, and performances.
- Foyer/Café: A casual meeting place offering refreshments for community gatherings.
- Kitchens: To support the main hall and café operations.
- Consultation Rooms: Multi-purpose spaces for meetings, workshops, and visiting services.
- Flexible Activity Space: A creative hub for arts, crafts, and workshops.
- Micro Library: A dedicated area for reading and learning.
Additionally, the building will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities like a Changing Places disabled-friendly toilet, solar panels, and green roofs designed to increase local biodiversity.
Sustainability is a core principle of the Unity Centre’s design. The building will adhere to Passivhaus principles, ensuring a low energy demand, complemented by solar panels and ground source heat pumps. The building’s eco-friendly features will align with the Council’s commitment to being “Green to our Core,” providing a sustainable space for years to come.
Local leaders are excited about the new community centre’s potential to strengthen the social fabric of Northstowe. Cllr Henry Batchelor, Lead Cabinet Member for Communities, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its environmental benefits and its role in fostering community engagement. Similarly, Cllr Natalie Warren-Green and Cllr Tom Bygott highlighted the growing need for such a facility, which will serve as a central hub for both existing and future residents of Northstowe.
A Long-Awaited Development
The Unity Centre is part of the broader development of Northstowe, which includes several community buildings like the temporary community centre, “The Cabin,” which has already become a hub for residents. With the construction of the Unity Centre now underway, Northstowe is one step closer to realising its full potential as a vibrant, sustainable town.
This groundbreaking event is a major achievement for the growing town, and as the project progresses, it will no doubt become a focal point for community activities, bringing people together and creating a welcoming space for all.
