Cambridge residents and commuters are being advised of a major road closure this summer as Coldhams Lane undergoes essential construction works. The road will be shut in both directions from 28 July to 29 August, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the period.
The closure is required to enable the first phase of a project to link Coldhams Lane with Cherry Hinton Road. The work includes the construction of a new T-junction, alongside a suite of infrastructure upgrades designed to improve safety and accessibility for all road users.
These improvements include the installation of cycle paths, traffic signals, pedestrian crossings, traffic islands, kerb realignments, and complete road resurfacing.
In a notice to residents, the project team apologised for any inconvenience caused and confirmed they are working closely with the Highway Authority to minimise disruption. In an effort to streamline the work and avoid further closures later in the year, Openreach and utility provider IGL will also carry out essential network upgrades during this period.
Access to the Heidelberg compound and Nuttings Road will be maintained throughout the works, ensuring residents and businesses in the immediate area are not cut off.
Local authorities are urging commuters to plan alternative routes in advance and to allow extra time for journeys during the closure window. Bus and delivery services may also experience delays or diversions while the works are underway.
Further updates are expected in the coming weeks as progress continues on what is expected to be a significant upgrade to the city’s road network.
