Chatteris is marking the completion of a £1 million redevelopment project, bringing new life to the town with a brand-new museum, refurbished council chambers, and five community rooms. The project, funded by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, will be officially celebrated at a special event this Friday.
One of the most significant aspects of the project is the conversion of the former Barclays Bank on Park Street into the new Chatteris Museum. The town’s previous museum closed in 2021 due to space limitations, and in 2023, its collections were moved into the newly renovated building. The new facility now includes a museum, community room, and commercial office spaces above, enhancing both cultural and economic opportunities for the town.
The Chatteris Town Council has also expanded its offices and council chambers, further modernizing local governance. Additionally, a section of the first floor has been converted into residential flats, ensuring a sustainable source of rental income to support key community initiatives.
By transforming a disused building into a vibrant hub for culture, services, and community engagement, we’re not only preserving the heritage of Chatteris but also ensuring its future as a thriving town centre.
Dr. Nik Johnson, Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough
