Echion Technologies, a global leader in niobium-based anode materials, has secured a £10 million investment from Barclays Sustainable Impact Capital and existing investor BGF.

This funding will accelerate the commercialisation of its breakthrough XNO technology, a game-changing niobium-based anode material designed for lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries.

Echion’s XNO anode material enables ultra-fast charging for Li-ion batteries, making it possible to charge safely in under 10 minutes. Unlike traditional battery materials, XNO offers a unique combination of high energy density, superior thermal stability, and an impressive lifespan of over 10,000 cycles.

This innovation is set to revolutionize heavy-duty industrial, commercial, and mass-transport electrification by delivering:

  • Faster charging times, reducing downtime for electric vehicles (EVs).
  • High performance in extreme conditions, making it ideal for industrial applications.
  • Longer battery lifespan, significantly lowering the total cost of ownership for fleet operators.

Echion Technologies has partnered with CBMM, the world’s leading niobium producer, to scale up the production of XNO. In November, the company launched the world’s largest niobium-based anode production facility, capable of producing 2,000 tons per year—equivalent to 1 GWh of Li-ion cells. This strategic move ensures that XNO is available at scale, ready for adoption by battery manufacturers worldwide.

Driving Commercialisation with New Funding

The £10 million investment will allow Echion to expand its network of battery cell manufacturers, enabling faster production and market deployment of XNO-powered Li-ion cells. Additionally, the funding will support partnerships with industrial original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), facilitating real-world applications of this advanced battery technology.

Jean de La Verpilliere, CEO of Echion Technologies, emphasized the significance of this investment:

This investment by Barclays and BGF is strong recognition of the value delivered by XNO. By utilising XNO, cell manufacturers can deliver the most innovative, sustainable, and high-performing batteries to facilitate the effective electrification of heavy-duty vehicles. Their investment will enable us to take the next major step forward in our fast-moving company journey.

With growing global demand for sustainable and efficient energy solutions, Echion Technologies is at the forefront of revolutionising battery performance. The ability to fast charge safely and operate reliably in demanding conditions makes XNO an ideal solution for industries looking to transition to electrification without compromising productivity.
