A new AI-powered virtual reality (VR) platform, developed by Dr. Chris Macdonald of the University of Cambridge, is set to transform the way people overcome public speaking anxiety.

According to a recent announcement, this free-to-use platform will be made publicly available starting March 15, 2025, on World Speech Day.

Public speaking anxiety affects up to 80% of students and professionals, limiting career and academic growth. Dr. Macdonald’s research, published through his work at Lucy Cavendish College, suggests that a single 30-minute session on this VR platform can significantly boost confidence and reduce anxiety.

Dr. Macdonald’s VR platform offers users a realistic and immersive experience to help them build public speaking skills through:

  • Photorealistic VR environments – Users can practice in settings that simulate real-life speaking engagements, from small classrooms to massive auditoriums.
  • AI-driven coaching – A virtual AI mentor provides constructive feedback, guiding users to improve their speech delivery.
  • Progressive exposure therapy – The platform gradually increases the difficulty level, helping users develop resilience and adaptability.

100% success in early trials

A recent trial conducted with students from Cambridge and UCL found that 100% of participants felt more confident and prepared after using the platform for just one week.

The fear of public speaking, known as glossophobia, triggers physical and emotional responses such as a racing heart, shaky voice, and mental blocks. Dr. Macdonald explains that avoiding public speaking can reinforce this fear, making it even harder to overcome.

“Public speaking anxiety negatively impacts mental health, academic success, and career growth,” says Macdonald. “Traditional therapy can be costly and time-consuming, while self-practice often lacks real-world challenges.”

While VR technology is often expensive, Dr. Macdonald designed this platform to be accessible:

  • Works on smartphones – Users can convert their smartphones into VR headsets using an affordable mount.
  • Compatible with multiple devices – Available on both Android and iOS.
  • Completely free to use – Breaking down financial barriers to public speaking training.

Dr. Macdonald will be demonstrating the VR platform at the Cambridge Festival on March 29-30, 2025. This will offer attendees a hands-on opportunity to try the technology and see its impact.

Beyond the free public platform, Macdonald is working on specialised applications, including VR training for job interviews, media appearances, and speech therapy for individuals with speech difficulties.

Access the free platform

Starting March 15, 2025, Dr. Macdonald’s AI-powered VR public speaking platform will be freely available worldwide. Whether you’re a student, professional, or aspiring speaker, this innovative tool provides an effective, research-backed way to improve public speaking skills.

For those interested in trying it out, the platform will also be showcased at the Cambridge Festival on March 29-30, 2025.
