Cambridge University Researchers Reveal Shocking Truth About Pheasant Meat

The study was conducted by researchers at Cambridge University and the University of the Highlands and Islands

A shocking new study has revealed that pheasant meat sold in Britain is contaminated with dangerous levels of toxic lead, posing a serious but little-known health risk to consumers. Despite repeated warnings from scientists, the vast majority of game birds shot and sold in the UK are still being killed using lead ammunition—leaving behind invisible but harmful metal fragments in the meat.

The study, conducted by researchers at Cambridge University and the University of the Highlands and Islands, found that 99% of pheasants tested in the 2024/25 season contained lead shot. Experts warn that even tiny amounts of lead in food can damage the nervous system, lower IQ in children, and increase the risk of heart and kidney disease in adults. Pregnant women and young children are particularly vulnerable, yet many consumers remain completely unaware of the risks.

“You’re Eating Lead—And You Won’t Even Know It”

Unlike whole bullets that can be removed, lead shotgun pellets shatter on impact, embedding microscopic fragments deep into the meat. A previous study led by Cambridge researchers found that these fragments are too small to see or feel, meaning that even carefully prepared game meat can still contain dangerous levels of lead.

Lead has been banned in petrol and household paint for decades due to its severe health risks, yet it remains shockingly unregulated in food. The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has now warned the UK government about the dangers of lead in game meat, and a ban on lead ammunition is under review. However, the study’s findings show that until action is taken, consumers could be unknowingly poisoning themselves every time they eat pheasant.

“It’s Like Smoking in Pubs All Over Again”

Professor Rhys Green, lead author of the study, compared the resistance to change within the shooting community to past battles over car seatbelts and smoking bans. “Despite clear evidence of harm, people don’t like to change their habits. The parallels with shooting game with lead ammunition are striking.”

While Denmark banned lead shot 30 years ago—with no impact on the popularity of shooting—many in the UK’s shooting industry continue to resist change. Even major retailers like Waitrose, which pledged to sell only lead-free game, have been let down by suppliers who continue using lead shot despite promising otherwise.

What You Can Do to Protect Yourself

Experts advise consumers to avoid eating game meat unless they can be certain it was shot with non-toxic ammunition. Pregnant women and young children should completely avoid pheasant, grouse, and other game meat that may contain lead.

With overwhelming scientific evidence against lead ammunition, many are now questioning why it remains legal in the UK. The government’s decision on a potential ban is expected in March 2025, but until then, lead-laced pheasant meat remains on sale—posing an invisible but serious danger to those who eat it.
