The Cambridge Union has unveiled its Easter term line-up, sparking both anticipation and controversy with a host of provocative guests, including right-wing American commentator Charlie Kirk and British media star Katie Price. The programme features 11 speaker events and six debates, underscoring the Union’s commitment to platforming diverse—and often divisive—voices.
Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, is scheduled to speak on 20 May. Known for his fiery rhetoric and controversial views on topics including abortion, race, and climate change, Kirk’s appearance follows a previously cancelled 2019 event after Turning Point UK invited speakers without the Union’s consent.
Joining the roster is Katie Price, the outspoken model and television personality, alongside political and cultural figures such as former Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, historian Ilan Pappé, ex-Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi, and psychologist Mary Trump—niece and critic of Donald Trump.
The Union’s President, Anoushka Kale, emphasised the event’s commitment to open dialogue in Varsity:
“Now, more than ever, amidst a turbulent global landscape, the importance of free speech can never be understated.”
Kale also marked the 60th anniversary of the Baldwin vs. Buckley debate as a reminder that “nothing should be beyond reproach or free from criticism.”
Beyond headline speakers, the Union’s debate topics this term include climate justice, the rise of Reform UK, and the abolition of the monarchy—suggesting a term that’s as politically charged as it is intellectually diverse.
As Cambridge continues to balance tradition with transformation, this term at the Union promises lively discussions at a time when freedom of speech remains both a rallying cry and a point of contention.
