The highly anticipated Cambridge South railway station will now open in early 2026, marking a shift from its initially planned completion by the end of this year. Network Rail has announced that the delay is due to two major projects that are integral to the station’s success. These include the Cambridge resignalling work and the forthcoming East Coast Main Line timetable changes, both essential for delivering a reliable and efficient train service.
Re-signalling dependencies
Network Rail explained that the opening delay is directly linked to the completion of two critical projects. The first is the extensive Cambridge resignalling program, part of the C3R (Cambridge Resignalling, Relock and Recontrol) programme, which is investing £194million to upgrade the local signalling system. This upgrade involves replacing outdated systems with new digital workstations and advanced signals to boost efficiency and safety. The second project is the East Coast Main Line timetable overhaul scheduled for December 2025. This timetable change will not only benefit services running to Cambridge South but also offer improved peak-time services and faster journey times for passengers traveling to London.
Infrastructure upgrades needed
The resignalling work is being carried out in multiple stages, with the first stage already completed over Christmas 2024. Engineers replaced a 40-year-old signalling control panel with modern digital workstations at Cambridge North and Ely, setting the stage for the next phase. Stage two, which will cover the area south of Cambridge station – including the new Cambridge South station – is planned around Christmas 2025. Upgrades such as installing a new digital display at the Cambridge signal box and enhancing safety measures at key level crossings will ensure the station is fully equipped for future demands.
A state-of-the-art transport hub
Despite the delay, the integrated infrastructure and timetable enhancements promise to deliver a state-of-the-art transport hub. Cambridge South railway station will serve the Biomedical Campus, the local community, and the wider region with improved services. The new timetable on the East Coast Main Line will introduce more evenly spaced departure times, additional peak-time services, and faster journeys to London, enhancing connectivity and convenience for commuters.
What to expect at Cambridge South
Construction of the station began in early 2023, and significant progress has been made. The main station building is complete, and the railway systems have undergone substantial upgrades. Passengers will benefit from four platforms with step-free access, accessible toilets, ample cycle parking for 1,000 bikes, and a convenient drop-off area. Greater Anglia will manage the station, ensuring a smooth transition once services commence.
