A Cambridge man has been sentenced following a major moped theft spree that saw more than 300 vehicles stolen across the city.
Moped Theft Investigation Uncovers £450K Crime Spree
Cambridgeshire detectives launched an investigation after a wave of moped, low-powered motorcycle, and electric bike thefts in 2022, amounting to over £450,000 in stolen vehicles. Officers identified a group linked to the crimes, including 53-year-old Mark Bailey of Nuttings Road.
A warrant executed at Bailey’s home in December 2022 led to the recovery of stolen vehicles and a mobile phone containing evidence of him selling the stolen goods.
Sentences Handed Down
At Cambridge Crown Court on 26 February, Bailey pleaded guilty to five counts of handling stolen goods. He was sentenced to 20 months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work.
Other individuals involved in the crime spree received various sentences:
- Bobby Bailey (19) – Two-year community order, 160 hours unpaid work (five counts of motor vehicle theft).
- Kieran Roberts (21) – One-year community order, 75 hours unpaid work (motor vehicle theft).
- Liam Kilpatrick (18) – 18-month community order (handling stolen goods, motor vehicle theft, and criminal damage).
- Three teenagers (aged 15, 16, and 17) – Yet to be sentenced.
Police Crack Down on Vehicle Crime
Detective Constable Antonio Fernandez, who led the investigation, said:
“We’re pleased our investigation has brought these offenders to justice. Our priority is to reduce crime and create safer neighborhoods.”
Protect Your Moped or Motorbike
To prevent theft, police advise owners to take extra precautions:
- Lock – Use a disc lock to secure the front brake disc.
- Chain – Use a chain lock through the back wheel and attach it to a secure object.
- Cover – A cover makes your vehicle less attractive to thieves.
If your moped or motorbike is stolen, report it online at www.cambs.police.uk or call 999 if the theft is in progress.
