A popular Greggs branch in Cambridge is set to close its doors for good. The shop, located on Fitzroy Street, will stop trading on March 31, 2025.
The bakery chain has confirmed that staff will be offered roles at nearby locations where possible. Another Greggs branch in Cambridge remains open at Station Square, opposite the railway station.
Greggs’ Expansion Plans
Greggs has more than 2,000 locations across the UK, with over 10 stores in Cambridgeshire alone. Despite this closure, the bakery giant has ambitious plans to expand, aiming for more than 3,000 branches in the future.
Founded in 1951 in Newcastle upon Tyne, Greggs has grown into one of the UK’s favorite food chains. In 2022, it opened its largest store inside a Primark in Birmingham.
What This Means for Cambridge
The Fitzroy Street closure is a disappointment for many locals who enjoy Greggs’ iconic sausage rolls, steak bakes, and sweet treats. However, customers can still visit other branches in the city or nearby towns for their favorite snacks.
Cambridge has seen several recent shop closures, but businesses continue to adapt to changing customer trends. Greggs’ expansion strategy suggests that new stores may open in different locations over time.
The Rise of US Fast Food Chains in Cambridge
While Greggs is closing one of its locations, American fast food brands are expanding in Cambridge. In recent years, major US chains like Popeyes, Wendy’s, Shake Shack, and Slim Chickens have opened new restaurants in the city. Their arrival reflects a growing demand for diverse fast food options, offering Cambridge residents a mix of traditional UK bakery treats and American-style burgers, fried chicken, and shakes.
