A man who stole rare coins worth £40,000 from a Cambridge business has been jailed for 30 months.
Joseph Ross, 35, targeted Cambridge Coins in Swan Road in the early hours of 20 February. Ross was arrested the following day at a property in Darwin Court, Cambridge. Officers discovered some of the stolen coins and casing used to display them during a search of the property.
Investigations revealed that in the weeks leading up to the burglary, Ross had also stolen high-value groceries — including steaks, salmon and chocolates — from supermarkets across Cambridge, amounting to hundreds of pounds in losses.
Ross, of Hawkins Road, Cambridge, pleaded guilty to burglary and seven counts of theft. He appeared at Peterborough Crown Court on 17 April, where he was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison.
PC Andy Smith, who led the investigation, said: “Ross showed a complete lack of regard for others and the law as he stole from shops and committed this high-value burglary. The burglary was devastating for the business owner and has had a long-lasting impact on them. I’m pleased Ross was apprehended and has now been jailed for his actions.”
The court heard that although some of the stolen items were recovered, the burglary caused significant distress to the business, which deals in rare and valuable collectables.
