Local biotech innovator Ignota Labs has announced a £5.5 million ($6.9 million) seed funding round, aiming to transform how the pharmaceutical industry tackles drug failures. Co-led by Montage Ventures and AIX Ventures, the round also saw participation from Modi Ventures, Blue Wire Capital, and Gaingels.
Founded just two years ago, Ignota Labs is on a mission to rescue promising but failed drugs using its proprietary AI platform, SAFEPATH. Drug safety issues account for more than half of clinical trial failures and cost the industry over $400 billion annually. Ignota’s approach combines cheminformatics, bioinformatics, and deep learning to identify not just what went wrong in drug development, but why it went wrong—offering a path to re-engineering drugs rather than abandoning them.
CEO and co-founder Sam Windsor, formerly of DeepMind’s AlphaFold team, explains: “Traditional safety tools stop at detection. SAFEPATH digs deeper, revealing the molecular causes of toxicity and guiding interventions to revive therapies that were nearly at the finish line.”
Ignota has already put its model to the test. Its first in-licensed asset—a metabolic health drug for post-menopausal women—was halted due to safety concerns. With SAFEPATH, the team pinpointed and resolved those issues, validating their fix in preclinical models. The funding will be used to expand Ignota’s drug pipeline and push the first asset into clinical trials.
Investors are calling SAFEPATH a “groundbreaking” and “data-driven” solution to a long-standing pharmaceutical challenge. “Ignota is shifting the R&D model from trial-and-error to precision engineering,” said Krish Ramadurai of AIX Ventures.
Backed by a world-class team with experience spanning AI, drug development, and commercialisation, Ignota Labs is poised to lead a new era in biotech—where abandoned drugs are given a second chance to save lives. The company is headquartered in Cambridge and is already drawing attention across the UK and beyond for its disruptive potential.
