More than £150,000 is due to be invested in new 20mph zones across Cambridgeshire next year, as part of the county council’s ongoing efforts to improve road safety and encourage active travel.

Councillors this week approved a list of 11 priority schemes for 2025–26, chosen from almost 100 applications submitted by towns and villages across the county. Seven of the projects are in South Cambridgeshire, two in Huntingdonshire and two in East Cambridgeshire.

A report presented to Cambridgeshire County Council on Tuesday (14 October) confirmed that while more than £1.4 million would be needed to deliver every proposed scheme, only £160,000 is available for the next financial year. Projects that miss out this time will remain on the list for future funding rounds, with the council aiming to eventually support all applications.

Prioritised 20mph schemes for 2025–26

  • Landbeach (village-wide)
  • Harston (village-wide)
  • Madingley (village-wide)
  • Barrington (village-wide)
  • Offord Cluny and Offord Darcy (village-wide)
  • Comberton (village-wide)
  • Newton (multiple roads)
  • Waresley (multiple roads)
  • Milton (village-wide)
  • Wilburton (village-wide)
  • Sutton (multiple roads, funded separately)

Further consultation will now take place with each community before the schemes are finalised.

Council officers confirmed that all applicants will be contacted and offered feedback to help strengthen future bids. They acknowledged that the current scoring system can favour urban areas due to higher traffic volumes but said rural projects have still succeeded in securing funding.

Officers said they would review the current process to ensure both urban and rural communities benefit fairly as the programme expands.

A separate initiative to explore 20mph schemes specifically within Cambridge city is also under development.
